Made on your computer

Translate a book in the desktop app and give the translation its own voice. Save both in one synced EPUB.

Your place, in both

Save words, find them again, and search both languages at once.

On older iPhones, too

On iOS 15 and 16, two-language books open in a simpler two-pane reader.

Want to try one? The public shelf in Reader has two-language editions to download: Frankenstein in English and Bulgarian, Alice in English and French, A Christmas Carol in English and Spanish, and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in English and Italian. Each is narrated in both languages.

English read by Kokoro, a free voice in Libratory. German by Cartesia, a cloud voice you can add with your own key.

One sentence at a time

Sentence pairs reads each sentence, then its translation. Give each language its own speed, hear it up to five times, and leave a pause to say it back.

Set it up the way you would in the app, then press play.

  • A Christmas CarolEnglish and Spanish
  • Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeEnglish and Italian

Or any book you own

  1. 1. Add a book you ownA PDF or a DRM-free EPUB, in the Libratory desktop app.
  2. 2. Translate itChapter by chapter, with a model on your computer or an online one with your own key. The original stays.
  3. 3. Give each language a voiceThen send the book to your phone. Scan the code on the app's Phone page, or use AirDrop or Files.

Next: say it back, and hear how it went

The pause after a sentence already gives you time to say it aloud. Speaking practice will listen and tell you how close you came.

It is not built yet. If you want it, open the listening options in a two-language book and tap Speaking practice (Beta). Tell us which language you are practising.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Reader is free on the App Store, and the desktop app is free for personal use. Online models and voices are optional, and their providers charge for them.

Which languages can I learn?

Any pair the translation model knows. Free voices on your computer read English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin and Bulgarian, among others. Other languages can use an online voice.

Is the translation made by AI?

Yes. A language model you choose translates each chapter. It reads well, but it can be wrong, so the original is always beside it.

Do I need the internet?

Only to get a book. Reading and listening work offline, with no account.

Is there an Android app?

Not yet. Reader is for iPhone and iPad. The desktop app runs on Mac, Linux and Windows.
